SURROGATE

The photographic, video and sculptural components of this installation address themes of Illness, death and a longing to engage with the process of life. Like 5 million other women in the United States, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and nonchalantly declared infertile. An intrusive journey into fertility treatments and the commercialization of reproduction began. No longer could I viewing the process of creating life as a private, natural or mysterious thing. Medical intervention offered false comfort in the form of controlled biology, an intersection of sex and science with a price tag. Like Barbara Kruger’s famous words, my body became a battleground.
