The notion that a spider web is simultaneously fragile and strong allows me to draw a connection conceptually between the web and the womb in these images. Protection, a nest, a home and at the same time a death trap. I draw on the experience of the death of my children shortly after birth; the womb is not only a safe haven but also a fragile, liminal space where death is also a possibility. Predator and protector, a sinister threat and an industrious repairer, like Louise Bourgeois I too see the spider as an eloquent representation of the mother. These webs were spun on the ceiling of a cave in Brazil, Indiana.
