Adam’s Apples

After a lengthy focus on femininity and motherhood I decided to explore masculinity and the male body. I shot images of my husband’s Adam’s apple and thought it was both visually and conceptually interesting, a quintessential male attribute. I decided to shoot the big bump jutting out from the throats of men. I asked several men I know if I could shoot them, not realizing that the Adam’s apple is prominent in only some men. Pointing out that they did not really have much for me to photograph made several of the men feel exposed and inadequate, while others with prominent Adam’s apples flaunted them for the camera like proud peacocks. The Adam’s apple is a part of the larynx or voice box. My compositions objectified men by cropping their identities, faces and bodies reducing them down to a single body part. I have photographed the thing that creates our physical voice and portrayed it as passive and voiceless.
